In the Coop with Kevin O'Malley!

We have a visitor in the coop! Who can it be?

He's bigger than a breadbox, stronger than a batch of Aunt Melma's Rum Cookies, and able to leap a frog in a single bound!

Of course, he's Kevin O'Malley, illustrator (and/or author) of over 40 picture books including WHO KILLED COCK ROBIN?, ONCE UPON A COOL MOTORCYCLE DUDE, and the Miss Malarkey series. We are so excited to welcome Kevin to the coop!

How do you know when what you write is funny?
I think a lot of stuff is funny. A lot of stuff I think is funny makes it into the dummy books I pitch to publishers. Publishers often don't share my sense of humor.

Do you have any tips for writing funny books?
Read as many humorists as you can. Don't read anything written by Russians.

Has being funny ever gotten you into or out of trouble?
I gave my 5th grade teacher an Irish seven course meal (a six pack and a potato). He called my dad. My dad sat me down. I thought I was done for. My father told me, with a twinkle in his eye, "Next time give him the cheap stuff."

What are some of your favorite funny books?
There are just too many to name.

If you could live in one of your books, which one would you choose?
That's a stiffening question. I can't imagine living in any of them. I'm a 3-d guy. I couldn't live all flattened out and getting dusty on a B&N shelf.

Who do you like more, The Marx Brothers or Three Stooges?
The Marx Bros without a doubt. I love reading the humorist S.J. Pearlman. He wrote several of the screen plays for their movies. I will skip a good party to watch 'Duck Soup' or 'A night at the Opera.'

What was your best Halloween costume?
My mother dressed my three brothers and me as convicts in striped prison garb complete with ball and chains. We marched along in the schools Halloween parade. We killed 'um! My mother followed along with a big stick in her hand. She said "What we have here is a failure to communicate."

What is your Dream Job for a day?
Playing jazz guitar along with my big brother on the up-right bass.

Clown V. Mime Deathmatch. Pick your winner.
It would be over in seconds. Mimes in the ring. The sight of the bozo make-up terrorizes him. First he'd try to make the 'trapped in glass box'. Then he'd fight a strong wind as he tried to get out of the ring, but the clown would just keep coming, seltzer bottle in hand. A quick blast of water and it would all be over. The mime is revealed to be a Vassar Grad who majored in Elizabethan poetry and thinks Marcel Marso is hot.
Happily the clown spends months in rehab after tangling his oversized shoes in the roping and tumbling to the floor.

Funniest dead person you'd like to meet?
Jean Shepherd or Erma Bombeck.

In the Coop with Dr. Cuthbert Soup

In the Coop with Dr. Cuthbert Soup

One of our very favorite books this year is A Whole Nother Story by Dr. Cuthbert Soup. It's the hilarious story of inventor Ethan Cheeseman and his three "smart, polite, and relatively odor-free" children. The family is on the run from thugs from various government agencies as well as some other nefarious mean guys and gals. These baddies are after a time travel invention the family hopes will help them bring back Mrs. Cheeseman who quite inconveniently kicked the bucket. Okay, so that's the plot, but it's completely unimportant. What is important is how fantastically funny this novel is. So read it already!!!

We'd like to welcome Dr. Cuthbert Soup to the Coop. And yes, we love how that rhymes!

Any bio info you'd like to share?

I have a Ph.D. in unsolicited advice from Southwestern North Dakota State University and I am the founder, president and vice-president of the National Center for Unsolicited Advice.

I live with my dog, Kevin, and my two pet snails, Gooey and Squishy, who just finished first and second in this year’s Iron Snail competition.

First act as Dictator for Life?

Serious jail time for supermarket express lane violators.

What kids lit character would you like to vote off the island?

Wait a minute here. Is this a set up? If I vote for the “wrong” one, will wingnuts call me a communist and throw bricks through my windows?

Kids lit character with whom you would you share your last twinkie?

As long as Augustus Gloop is around I don’t believe I’d have much choice in the matter and I don’t think it would be considered sharing.

What TV family would you like to be adopted by?

I’m way ahead of you. I’ve already been adopted by the Partridge Family, who needed a trombone player for their upcoming reunion tour. Little do they know the only song I can play is “Ta daaaa!”

Worst job in the universe?

I have had some of worst jobs in the universe, including working as a smoke detector at the mall. And I still suffer from severe knuckle damage from my two-year stint selling hearing aids door to door.

Dream job for a day?

Product tester at an inflatable bouncy castle factory.

Marx Brothers or Three Stooges?

Three Stooges and only because in Spanish they are Tres Estupidos, which I think you will find, is muy fun to say.

Clown V. Mime Deathmatch. Pick your winner.

If you’d ever been kicked in the groin by one of those giant clown shoes you wouldn’t have to ask.

Funniest dead person you'd like to meet?

I generally find dead people to be rather dull and unfunny, though to their credit, most are excellent listeners. That said, I would love to meet the late great Mel Blanc.

Best use for a book shaped object? (You know, one of those things sold as books but which should never ever have been published.)

Anyone with a three-legged couch knows the answer to this question. Also, when hurled from second story windows, they act as an excellent deterrent to solicitors.

In the Coop with Kevin Sherry

Who's the biggest thing in the publishing ocean these days? That would be author-illustrator Kevin Sherry, whose books I'm The Biggest Thing in the Ocean and I'm the Best Artist in the Ocean made a huge splash in bookstores around the country. Nothing fishy about it, this talented creator is making waves!

How do you know when what you write is funny?

When my editors think it's funny. Ha Ha, just kidding. Actually, I really appreciate it when both babies AND their parents think what I write is funny. I know I'm on to something then.

Do you have any tips for creating funny books?

Read a lot. I've been reading comics and comic strips since I could reach the library shelf. Far Side, Calvin and Hobbes, Garfield, Peanuts, Mad Magazine, everything. Take it all in, and then later it comes out naturally.

Has being funny ever gotten you into or out of trouble?

Actually, I think it got me a detention a few times...but usually it smoothes out a situation.

What are some of your favorite funny books?

I like Dave Barry. He's got some funny books. I've gotten into Patrick McDonnell who writes "Mutts" I think "Mutts" is the best strip on the funny pages.

Do you prefer the Marx Brothers or The Three Stooges?

I am not completely familiar with either. I'm a little too young. You should ask "Simpsons or Seinfeld?"

What was your best Halloween costume ever?

I made a giant bear head out of hardware cloth and fake fur. The eyes were made out of clay. I wore it for halloween(and various other events) for years. I used to combine costumes, for instance, it could be a DOCTOR Bear or a GHOST Bear. One time the bear was Michelangelo from The Ninja Turtles. You can see the bear on YouTube if you search for my name.

Clown Vs. Mime Deathmatch. Pick your winner.

Clowns have lots of weapons or at least access to weapons and mimes would have to "mime" weapons. So weapons.

Funniest dead person you'd like to meet?

Roald Dahl

Mark Twain

Chris Farley

Chicken Cheeks

Chicken Cheeks
by Michael Ian Black
illustrated by Kevin Hawkes
Simon & Schuster
ISBN: 978-1416948643

Warning: If you are the type of person who doesn't believe the word "bum" belongs in a children's book, then read no further. This book is not for you. Trust us. However, if you are the type of person who couldn't help but snicker or at least grin when you read the word "bum" a few seconds ago, then welcome to the coop, dear friend! Because we chicks find bums pretty darn funny, and the kids we hang out with think they're even funnier.

Chicken Cheeks is a fanny extravaganza, a delightful romp of rumps throughout the Wild Kingdom. From the cheeky chick on the cover to the moose caboose inside, each animal modestly displays his or her backside in an attempt to reach...oops, never mind, we don't want to ruin the surprise (rear) end! Master illustrator Kevin Hawkes never fails to deliver, and children's book newcomer Michael Ian Black slings around his synonyms so effortlessly that old Roget would be green with envy. Plus, it turns out Michael Ian Black is really one of us.

A Celebration and a Contest, too!

What's going on?

The Three Silly Chicks are fluffin' up our feathers, cleaning off our glasses, breaking out the tortilla chips, and getting ready to celebrate!

"Why?" you ask. "Because," we answer, "our anniversary is almost here!"

We began our blog on September 14, 2006 and
what a year!

We've read so many great & funny books and interviewed some of our favorite funny writers and illustrators:
Lisa Wheeler, Lisa Yee, Aaron Reynolds, Cyn & Greg Leitich Smith, Kevin O'Malley, Esme Codell, David Lubar, Kara & Jenna LaReau, John Manders, Dori Chaconas, Margie Palatini, Kelly DiPucchio!

Interviewing fantastic, funny people is our favorite thing (next to bean dip), so we can't wait to interview more fantastic, funny people!

But first, we feel like having a party and nothing puts us in the party mood faster than bean dip! Sadly, nothing ends a party in a small coop faster than bean dip.

So we're going to have a contest, instead! And here it is:

Mystery Guest

Are you ready for our Mystery Guest?

1. Contest begins NOW!
2. Guess the secret identity of our Mystery Guest! (Click on "comments" down below to leave your guess.)
3. All correct guesses will be entered in a drawing for the grand prize*
4. Grand prize winner will be announced on September 14!
5. First five entries will win a Chick Magnet**
6. First Clue: Our Mystery Guest is bigger than a bread box

* Grand Prize is one of the following:

  • A vat of bean dip
  • An emu
  • An emu in a vat of bean dip
  • A super-duper-bag-o'-goodness from the Three Silly Chicks. Bag includes autographed copies of books by Andrea Beaty, Carolyn Crimi, and Julia Durango. Also includes assorted items from our drawer of silliness (not to be confused with our silly drawers as shown here.)
** Chick magnets are not guaranteed to attract chicks, hot babes, hot Emus or hot tamales. May present a choking hazard to Emu, ostriches, and other humorously large birds. Chick magnets are guaranteed to look extremely cute and hold scraps of paper on your refrigerator door so you can ignore them while searching for bean dip.
